FAQs
What do I need to do before our first session?
You will need to fill out several online forms, which you will receive via email upon booking your appointment. The email will be fromSimple Practice. These forms need to be filled out several days in advance of your appointment — I’ll email you after you book to let you know when they need to be filled out by. The forms include a questionnaire, HIPAA notice of privacy practices, consent for telehealth, communication guidelines, and a credit card authorization form.
Why do you collect credit card information if I'm using my health insurance?
I charge a fee for no-shows and cancellations within 24 hours of an appointment (although I can make exceptions if a true emergency comes up). In addition, in the event that your insurance denies the claim for whatever reason, you would be responsible for my out-of-pocket fees ($150 USD for an initial session and $100 USD for a follow-up).
I will never charge your card for anything without letting you know first. But I do keep a card on file to protect myself against scenarios in which individuals don’t show up for an appointment or have a claim denied, and subsequently don’t pay money owed
How do I verify if my insurance covers this service?
I can verify your benefits for you. To do so, I need a clear picture of the front and back of your insurance card, along with your date of birth. You can send this to me via email.
You can also call the member services number on your insurance card:
Did you know most insurance plans cover nutrition counseling?
Many people don’t realize their insurance already includes benefits for working with a registered dietitian — often anywhere from 3 to 26 visits per year at no cost to you.
We are currently in-network with Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Healthcare, and Cigna.
How to check your benefits:
Call or chat with your insurance provider and ask:
“Do I have coverage for nutrition counseling with a registered dietitian?”
You can give them these billing codes:
97802 – Initial visit
97803 – Follow-up visits
Most plans treat nutrition counseling as part of your preventive care benefit, but some require a referral or a specific medical diagnosis. While you’re on the phone, ask:
Is this benefit only covered for certain diagnoses? (ex: diabetes, high cholesterol, etc.)
Are there any diagnoses that are not covered under my nutrition benefit?
How many visits do I get per year? Is it unlimited or a set number?
Do I need a referral? If yes, who can provide it?
Is there a copay or coinsurance for these visits?
Based on my current deductible, what would my out-of-pocket cost be to see a dietitian?
4) What to expect during our first session?
Every session starts with getting to know you; your health history, your experience with food and fitness, and what brought you in. From there, we’ll talk through what’s working, what’s not, and what goals you want to focus on. Depending on your needs, I may walk you through some education, help you troubleshoot challenges, or map out clear strategies to move you forward.
No two sessions look exactly the same; everything is individualized. My job is to bring expertise, but your action sets the direction. Together, we’ll create a plan that actually fits your life.
5) Do you give calorie or macro targets? Do I have to track them to work with you?
If we decide together that tracking is the right fit, I can provide calorie and macro targets. But instead of jumping straight into numbers, I often have clients spend a week or two tracking what they normally eat while monitoring their weight. That gives us a much more accurate starting point than using a generic formula or online calculator.
And no — you do not have to track calories or macros to work with me. It’s just one tool, not a requirement. About half of my clients track, and half don’t. It all depends on your goals, your lifestyle, and what you’re actually willing to do consistently.
My approach is always individualized. There’s no one-size-fits-all plan here.
6) Do you offer support between sessions?
In general, no. All coaching, guidance, and feedback takes place during our 1:1 video sessions. I don’t provide ongoing email or text support between appointments, so we can keep everything focused, intentional, and high-value during our dedicated time together.
7) How does insurance work for sessions with you?
I handle the insurance claim process for you by submitting each session directly to your provider. If your plan covers nutrition counseling, there’s nothing you need to do. If a claim is denied or your insurance indicates that you owe a balance, I’ll notify you by email before anything is charged. You will never be billed without prior notice and a clear explanation.
My goal is always to have sessions fully covered and to keep your out-of-pocket costs as low as possible. While coverage varies widely by plan and insurance company, I do everything I can to help maximize your benefits and reduce what you pay.
8) Do you provide personal training or workout plans?
I don’t create formal, individualized training programs, but I can offer general guidance around movement: such as types of exercises to prioritize, how often to train, and suggested rep ranges, during our 1:1 sessions. Since my primary focus is nutrition, any exercise guidance is kept high-level and educational rather than a full training plan.
That said, I do have a strong background in fitness and am happy to support you in building healthy movement habits. If you're looking for a structured, customized workout program or hands-on coaching, I have a network of highly skilled personal trainers I trust and would be glad to connect you with someone who fits your goals and style.
9) How often will we meet?
Most clients choose to meet every other week because it provides steady accountability and enough time to make meaningful progress between sessions. Some prefer weekly check-ins for extra support, while others schedule monthly or occasional follow-ups once they feel more confident on their own. A few people even come for a single session and that’s all they need.
The frequency is completely up to you, there’s no required schedule. In my experience, the clients who see the most consistent success are the ones who meet weekly or every other week.
10) Payments. Do I need health insurance to work with you?
You’re not required to use insurance to work with me. If you’d rather pay out of pocket, if your insurance doesn’t cover nutrition services, or if you’re located outside the U.S., you can simply use my self-pay rates:
$150 USD for an initial session
$100 USD for each follow-up session
OR a 6-session package for $450 (to be used within 3 months, typically every other week)
The package is a good option if you want ongoing support at a lower per-session rate.
